Join the Phoebes for a stop along the Great Florida Birding Trail: Matheson Hammock Park. Grassy fields and tall hardwood hammocks host migratory songbirds and vagrants from the tropics.
Nature-loving women are invited to join the Phoebes on our next birding field trip- Sunday, April 14th at Wakodahatchee Wetlands. The Wakodahatchee boardwalk is a marvel for life-long birders and newbies alike during spring nesting season. Watch great egrets flare their lacy plumes, great blue heron chicks jostle for fish, wood storks clash beaks, and green herons quietly slip behind a veil of vegetation into their nests, all just a few feet from the walkway.
Field trip leader Paddy Cunningham will lead a Phoebes Birding field trip to Evergreen Cemetery, a migrant trap and bird oasis in eastern Ft. Lauderdale due to its proximity to the coast. The numerous mature Live Oaks and Strangler Figs provide the food and necessary cover for a variety of songbirds, exotics and the raptors that feed on them. The open canopy allows for easier viewing of migrants and resident birds, so it is an excellent and consistent birding hot spot in Broward. It also has an adjacent rare coastal ridge cliff along a waterway for water birds and to peek for water thrushes and thrushes.
Field Trip leader Michele Louden will lead a birding outing at Plantation Preserve and Linear Trail in Broward County. The 1.1-mile long trail bisects a public 18-hole golf course (the Plantation Preserve Golf Course) and has ponds, canals and wetlands bordering both sides. It is also lines with live oaks, and other bird-attracting trees and plants including cocoplum and firebush, making it a superb place to observe both water birds including egrets and limpkins, as well as migrating warblers, thrashers, and cardinals.
